The Asylum was used as a kindred gathering point over the winter of '07-'08, sponsored by the Gangrel. The meeting was interrupted by a lupinesque gorilla and some teenagers who heralded the return of the "Emperor," a spirit that haunted Chicago for some time.
Site: The Grounds of the Haunted Asylum
Type: Forest Preserve, self-proclaimed Domain of Dragon Jon
Description: The asylum was demolished by Michael Cortez, a former kindred of Champaign. The building was previously an Edwardian mansion, built in the 1880's, in the decade after The Fire. Occupation by a cult of drug-crazed spirit worshippers destroyed the rest of the outbuildings. There is much debris in the form of stone, brick, and metal strewn about the grounds, though wooden beams and supports are notably absent, perhaps due to the fire pit in a centrally located depression near the center of the ruins. Graffiti is everywhere. A dozen cults and gangs must frequent the place. Several areas show signs of the ground being disturbed, as if someone had been digging holes. A large metal table lies half-buried, strange writings on it, resembling an altar. There is a smell of death, or at least rotting carcasses, permeating the area. Coyotes are common.
History: Long before any white man entered the region, this was a haunt of shamans. The site was a magnet for many spirits of the region. As civilization encroached, most disappeared. Chicago grew larger by incorporating smaller outlying townships, but this land remained distinctly rural. After the Great Fire, the site was purchased by Ambrose Whitney, who built his home here. Whitney died of a seizure shortly after. The house lay empty for nearly 50 years. It was eventually purchased by a team of doctors, opening under the name Restful Homes for the Mind. There were allegations of criminal conduct. Several patients died here. The home operated into the early 60's, when officials shut it down.
Activity: The site is haunted. It is also rumored to attract lycanthropes. Those who trespass are considered hostile.
